ImageWest Allis-West Milwaukee School District in partnership with the West Allis Rotary Club Skype Mentoring Program

Vision: Students will be provided with the opportunity for academic enrichment by being paired up with a mentor through the use of Skype to extend their learning and build relationships within the community.

Process:

• Students were identified at the Intermediate School level that may be in need of academic support

• Mentors from within the Rotary Club were assigned to a student to tutor in math

• Mentors and students meet twice a week for a half hour. Dates and times are determined by schedules of mentors and students. Each mentor is asked to briefly log the date, time and lesson covered from each session.

• Students are asked to bring homework, quizzes, tests and questions to the sessions

• The math mentors all were given Teacher Edition textbooks to help guide their instruction

Benefits:

• The West Allis-West Milwaukee School District is promoting the use of 21st Century Skills and 24/7 learning through the use of technology

• Students are offered one-on-one academic support

• Flexible scheduling in case student/mentor needs to reschedule

• Relationships are built with prominent community members throughout the City of West Allis-West Milwaukee.

Future Plans:

• 2012-2013 school year: plans to expand the program to all two Intermediate Schools.

• Mentors will continue to be paired with students to build community relationships
